Abstract

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 represents a significant transformation in the structure, objectives, and delivery of higher education in India. It seeks to create an education system that is multidisciplinary, flexible, inclusive, learner-centred, skill-oriented, and responsive to the changing needs of society and the global economy. The implementation of NEP 2020 in higher education institutions involves substantial reforms in curriculum design, multidisciplinary education, academic flexibility, vocational and skill development, research and innovation, digital learning, institutional autonomy, faculty development, and internationalization. However, translating these policy objectives into effective institutional practices presents several challenges. Inadequate infrastructure, financial constraints, shortage of trained faculty, regional disparities, digital inequality, resistance to institutional change, regulatory complexities, and differences in institutional capacity may affect the pace and quality of implementation. At the same time, NEP 2020 provides significant opportunities to improve the quality and accessibility of higher education, promote interdisciplinary learning, strengthen research and innovation, enhance employability, encourage technology-enabled education, and expand India's engagement with the global academic community. This paper critically examines the major challenges and opportunities associated with the implementation of NEP 2020 in higher education institutions. It argues that successful implementation requires coordinated efforts among governments, regulatory bodies, universities, colleges, faculty members, students, and other stakeholders. Adequate financial resources, institutional autonomy, capacity building, technological infrastructure, effective monitoring, and context-specific implementation strategies are essential for achieving the transformative objectives of NEP 2020.
