Analytical Study of Zubeen Garg and His Music for Assam and Assamese People

Abstract

Zubeen Garg occupies a singular place in modern Assamese cultural history because his career cannot be reduced to playback success alone. He emerged as a singer, composer, lyricist, performer, actor, filmmaker and public figure whose music connected folk memory, urban emotion, political anxiety and popular entertainment. This paper offers an analytical study of Zubeen Garg’s musical journey and examines how his work shaped Assamese society through language, identity, youth culture, regional cinema, public protest and social commitment. The discussion traces his rise from the album Anamika to his larger presence in Assamese and national music circuits, paying particular attention to his use of Assamese linguistic registers, his engagement with Bihu and other indigenous forms, and his capacity to move between regional and pan-Indian audiences without abandoning cultural rootedness. The study argues that Zubeen Garg’s importance lies not only in his artistic versatility but also in his ability to become a medium through which Assamese people experienced belonging, grief, aspiration and dissent. His music helped modernize Assamese popular music while simultaneously renewing interest in local sound worlds. It also contributed to the symbolic projection of Assam beyond the region. By combining descriptive discussion with cultural analysis, the paper concludes that Zubeen Garg must be understood as a major cultural institution in himself, whose music shaped public feeling and social discourse in Assam over several decades.
